well, the easy thing: C O U N T R Y B R E A D ! we met the family wepking (john and halee and their kiddos) around a rusty firepit on middle brow's lot in 2019. they gave us a bag of rye flour to test. it was wild-good. so we slowly started incorporating their stuff into our mixes—bread and pizza and pastry alike. it's organic. it's identity-preserced—they use a blend of wheat to reduce risk each year, but they know the farm whence came every single grain in such blend. it's grassy. and kitchen-spicy. and supple. and open. and you could seriously eat the whole thing on your country- or cottage-drive home. but don't! cut some w a bread knife. lightly toast it. put some late season tomatoes and olive oil and lemon and chili flakes on it. drink half a bottle of middle brow wine to buzz. and then tear into the rest w your hands.
you're also getting two bottles of wine! now, sweaty season is slowly drifting toward sweater season. we get it. it smells like it's fall. it looks like it's fall. but it's still, like, nearly 80º in the sun. so we're giving you a mix.
first! something super exclusive. our C L U B W I N E ! the original idea for this wine was that we'd launch our wine club with it. and....... we are?! sort of. the funny thing is that sportsman's club, a bar in chicago, came to us earlier this year hoping to make a wine together. and we could hardly resist utilizing the name "club wine".
traminette might just be our favorite of all the hybrids varietals with which we tinker. it's got lychee on the nose like an hawaiian road market would. we mean: thicc. fresh. damp. earthy. overripe. and then flowers like our old friend out-there-molly's apartment likely once did. the same oils and compounds dominate in roses and elderflowers and lychee and...... traminette. but then, like most of our hybrids tend to do, this grape ferments aggressively. and dries out. but retains all that juice! juicy AND dry! a real thing.
anyway: traminette features here. with some supporting work by vidal blanc and early-pick'd michigan chard. tropix in the midwest by b'flannel'd farmers.
CLUB WINE // traminette • vidal blanc • chardonnay // 2023 // lake michigan shore // dry-farmed // stainless • sur lie // 11%
and second! to help usher in fall a bit. F L O W E R B A R K ! we h8 trader joe's! sry not sry. let's wrap a single cucumber in plastic jic! i mean: we still shop there. because we love it, too. but you know those chocolate blueberries in the snappy plastic snack box above the frozen general joe's chicken? that's how this chambourcin haul ferrmented out. loud blue acids. deep, rich edges. light and bright. and uplifting. like fall-in-the-summer. lingers a bit on your cold, newborn tongue. d'lish!
FLOWER BARK // chambourcin // 2023 // lake michigan shore // dry-farmed // stainless • sur lie // 13%
ok. that's all for this first email ever of all time by (wo)man. we're so happy to be here. in michigan. we're so happy for the chance to meet all of you. and we're hopeful for a long, long friendship. w generations of your families.
thank you. so sincerely. and see you sunday.
pete. and the whole middle brow fam.
